12 {Old Money} Style Essentials EVERY Guy Needs

August 18, 2024
This year, I visited two super bougie locations: Aspen and The Cloister. Aspen’s style was ‘new money,’ with prevalent brand names and logos. The ‘new money’ style in Aspen was all about flash and letting people know that they had money by wearing expensive clothing.

However, in contrast, the Cloister expressed style in an understated and refined way. The ‘old money’ style was more understated elegance because they didn’t need to show off or brag that they had money.

Staple ‘old money’ style items to incorporate into your wardrobe

  1. Natural-looking hair. Skin fades are not a thing. Hair styles are a lot more preppy and old-school, such as combovers, slickbacks, and side parts. Hairstyles are more natural, longer, and more like a bro flow.
  2. Classic style sunglasses. Styles like a Clubmaster, Aviator, or Wayfarer are ‘old money.’ There is no flamboyance in the sunglasses.
  3. Luxury timepiece. Classic watches like a Rolex are premium but also understated. They are not super flashy. There’s no bling, and the watches are not decked out. ‘Old money’ is more elegant, and sometimes heirlooms are passed down from generation to generation.
  4. Button-down white oxford. Whether short or long sleeves, a white oxford is an ‘old money’ style must-have. They look great paired with shorts or even a swimsuit. You can rock them with chinos and tuck them in to go to dinner.
  5. Polo shirt. You need a clean, classic, and crisp polo, like from Collars and Co., which features dress shirt type collars.
  6. Subdued color palette. You’ll see a lot of whites, creams, tans, and khakis with an ‘old money’ aesthetic. You’ll also see paler shades, such as pale yellows, pale pinks, and lighter blues.
  7. Tailored suit. The tailoring of a suit as an ‘old money’ aesthetic is flawless. The fabric will be more interesting as well. The suits drape better than a cheap suit, and the thread count is high so that it moves and lays nicely. It drapes properly because of the thread count.
  8. Chino’s all day, every day. An ‘old-money’ aesthetic is chinos in tan, light blue, pink, and other lighter fabrics. Make sure that they’re more tailored but look casual.
  9. Loafers. They are an amazing option for ‘old money’ aesthetic. Suede is a popular option.
  10. Thinner belt. ‘Old money’ belts are smaller, thinner, and subtler, and options include braided, golf, alligator, or other leather.
  11. Minimal leather sneakers. The gum sole gives a more classic look. Playful colors and suede are also popular.
  12. Short and patterned bathing suits. The bathing suits are typically short and have a playful pattern. They do not opt for board shorts.
