25 years old is the point at which a boy becomes a grown man. When you’re younger, under 25, a man is still doing a lot of stupid stuff. Society doesn’t expect as much from you, and you’re still figuring life out. You may have just graduated from college, you may be living at home, and you may have roommates if not. You’re still making mistakes, but at 25, things start to change.
After 25, your job may improve, you may be living alone, and you may be thinking more about a long-term career goal. You may have started a 401k plan, and you may have begun to evolve stylistically. As your style starts to mature, you’re not wearing the stuff you wore when you were younger. You start looking more mature and refined as a respectable gentleman.
The last piece of that puzzle is your hair. Many men are still rocking hairstyles unsuitable for a grown man. So, I want to cover some hairstyles that men should avoid if they’re over 25.
Mature men don’t rock hair like this
Extreme colors. Any stupid hair colors you see are terrible, and nobody will take you seriously if you’re rocking extreme colors.
Eyes covered. That emo style, where it’s long, angsty, and covering the eyes, is not cool for a grown man. If you have to keep whipping your head to get the hair out of your eyes, you’re going to end up with neck problems, and you just look stupid. You need a hairstyle with more structure and substance. You can have bangs, but they need to be swept away.
Hard, crunchy, gelled. Those hairstyles and ones that are oily, greasy, or wet are inappropriate. Embrace natural texture and go with the flow. Use products like texturizing powder that will give you hold but also movement. You’ll get volume with a matte finish. Your hair will not look styled and overly processed. Soft putty is another recommendation where you can have a natural look with hold.
Unhealthy. As a grown man, you need to think about buying higher-quality products. These products are healthier for your hair and will work better. You’ll look better as well. Sure, they may cost slightly more than cheap drugstore products, but the ingredients are good for your hair and work incredibly well.
TikTok inspired. Any style that gets super popular on TikTok is too youthful. Avoid them if you’re over 25.
Fauxhawks. If you’re a musician, tattoo artist, hairstylist, and so forth, you can get away with extreme or edgy hairstyles. But if you want to be taken seriously, choose something more refined and mature. Choose something old-money sexy.
Extreme mullets. A particular mullet type still works over 25, but it can’t be super long in the back or really short up top. You want to do more of a baby mullet or one that is more stylized. It all depends on your career.
Unprofessional. If your objective is being a tech bro, working at home, or doing something solo, your hairstyle doesn’t matter as much. But you need a more professional look if you’re out facing customers and peers or climbing the corporate ladder. Extreme hairstyles are best suited for weekends or hanging with your buddies. If you want to climb the corporate ladder, understand what your hairstyle looks like for customers and others around you. If you’re rocking a youthful style that might be cool, how are they perceiving you? You may not be given as many chances if perceived as youthful. Be a bit more polished and presentable.
Top knot. The sumo knot or man bun does look good on some guys, but you have to be ‘that guy’ with ‘that job’ to make it okay to look artistic and edgy.
Long. If you’re shaved all over and have a little longer hair for a tiny ponytail, that’s not cool. If you want longer hair, there’s a happy medium.
Broccoli. This hairstyle is super curly on top and super short over the ears and around the back. It’s not cool. It makes your face look round, and you look like you’re 14 years old.
Spiked. This is the 90s boy band look, and it’s not cool or in style.
Super high-maintenance. Men don’t have time to mess around, spending 40 minutes styling their hair. It’s not worth it. Perhaps when you’re younger, you might spend more time on the flat iron or spiking it. When you’re mature, you need casual easiness. You don’t need a ton of products, and you don’t need to get your sides super faded every two weeks.
