Jeans are one of the most versatile things a guy can own, but here’s the deal: the wrong shoes can absolutely destroy the look. Running shoes with jeans? Terrible. Boat shoes? Nope. Toms? Come on, gentlemen. If you want to look amazing in denim, you need footwear that complements the jeans and elevates the entire outfit.
Great denim deserves great footwear. Whether I’m going casual with retro sneakers, stepping things up with loafers, or bringing some rugged badassery with a cap-toe boot, the shoe needs to complement the jeans and the overall vibe I’m going for. Get the combination right and a simple pair of jeans can look freaking amazing. These are the shoes I think look best with jeans.
BADASS ways to combine footwear with denim
1. Retro-Inspired Sneakers – Retro sneakers are one of my favorite options because they’re casual without making it look like you just left the gym. Think Jordan 1 lows, vintage-inspired Nike, Adidas, Puma, ASICS, and other throwback silhouettes. They add personality and style to your jeans while keeping the outfit relaxed. The key is choosing a sneaker that looks intentional, not athletic.
2. Minimal Leather Sneakers – Every guy needs at least one great pair of minimal leather sneakers. Personally, I love white leather with a gum sole. They’re clean, masculine, incredibly versatile, and instantly elevate denim. I’m also a huge fan of suede versions because suede is basically a style cheat code. Whether it’s on a sneaker, loafer, or boot, suede adds richness, texture, and detail most guys aren’t rocking.
3. Suede Loafer Sneakers – The loafer sneaker gives you the best of both worlds. You get the sophisticated shape and style of a loafer combined with the comfort and casual feel of a sneaker sole. Brown suede is especially versatile, but other colors can look incredible too. If you want something a little more elevated than your standard casual sneaker without getting too dressy, this is an amazing option.
4. Loafers – If you don’t own a pair of loafers, you’re missing out. If I could only own one pair of dress shoes for the rest of my life, I’d probably choose a great pair of brown loafers. They’re more versatile than black, in my opinion, and they look incredible with dark-wash denim. You can also wear them with chinos, slacks, or a suit. Suede loafers with a softer rubber sole are another killer option when you want something slightly more casual.
5. Double Monk Straps – When I really want to dress up a great pair of dark-wash jeans, I still love a double monk strap. They’re cleaner and a little more playful than a traditional lace-up Oxford, which is why I think they work better with denim. Pair them with dark jeans, a tucked-in button-up, and maybe a sport coat, and you’ve got a sexy, sophisticated outfit without looking overly formal.
6. Suede Chukka Boots – If you’re looking for an almost perfect casual boot to wear with jeans, the suede chukka is tough to beat. The silhouette is relaxed, while the suede adds richness and texture. They also work beautifully with chinos. Chukkas give you that sweet spot between casual and polished without looking like you’re trying too hard.
7. Chelsea Boots – Chelsea boots are another incredible option because you can choose the style based on how dressy or rugged you want to go. A sleek Chelsea boot looks amazing with clean, non-distressed dark jeans and can even work with chinos or a suit. A chunkier, more rugged Chelsea gives you a masculine, casual vibe. And because there are no laces, your jeans fall cleanly over the boot without getting caught.
8. Rugged Cap-Toe Lace-Up Boots – Last but definitely not least is the rugged cap-toe lace-up boot. This is one of my favorite options with medium-wash or slightly distressed denim. The cap toe adds visual interest, while a thicker lug sole brings some masculine energy without turning the boot into something huge and bulky. Look for a boot that’s streamlined enough around the ankle that your jeans can fall naturally over it.
