5 Leather Jacket Rules All Men Should Follow {AVOID LOOKING STUPID}

October 14, 2025
There’s a razor-thin line between looking like a badass and looking like a dumbass when wearing a leather jacket. My goal today is simple. I want to help you identify the best jacket for you by going over some rules that every man should know.

You should be able to pick one out that makes you feel like a badass without looking like a dumbass. You don’t want to look like a math teacher in a leather jacket; it just doesn’t work.

I’m obsessed with leather jackets because whenever you slip into one with a simple pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a pair of boots or sneakers, you automatically feel cooler. When you wear the right leather jacket, you’ll get tons of compliments, too.

Look cool and get those compliments!

  1. Never wear fake leather. Choose genuine leather or suede. There’s no substitute.
  2. Prices vary. I have spent anything from $350 to $1,500 on a fantastic leather jacket. It boils down to finding one that you can afford, of the highest quality. Remember that you don’t always get what you pay for.
  3. Know what style is right for you. The first option is a trucker jacket, a casual choice with a rugged aesthetic. Another is the bomber, which is one of the most perfect leather jackets. It’s a bit dressier than the trucker jacket. Make sure you keep it simple without a lot of zippers and bling. It’s an excellent option for any age. The third jacket is incredibly versatile and slightly edgier. The racer jacket is clean with a simple design, and they are a bit more rugged. The moto jacket presents a little issue with older guys trying to look stylish. It’s edgy and works incredibly well, but they’re casual and give a counterculture vibe. Other types of jackets are the flight jacket and the boxy boring jacket. Note that wearing brown, gray, or light tan will get you more compliments. Black is a classic color for a jacket, but you’ll get more compliments with those other colors. People notice because they’re a bit out of the box, and brown is a superior color for jackets. Also, don’t wear shiny leather. Matte leather looks a lot more luxe, rich, and casual cool. Super shiny looks cheap and fake. Bottom line is to assess what your day-to-day aesthetic is. Figure this out before buying your leather jacket because you don’t want to mismatch your jacket style with your aesthetic. Align it.
  4. Your shoes and jacket need to complement each other. If you’re wearing a leather jacket, consider pairing it with boots or minimal leather sneakers. Match your shoes with your jacket depending on the outfit and look you’re going for. Avoid Hey Dudes, Tom’s, and other Dad shoes, along with running shoes with leather jackets.
  5. Make sure to nail the fit. You don’t want your leather jacket too big and baggy. Your jacket should fit like a stylish leather hug. Ensure it’s fitted and becomes a part of you. Even if it’s a bit snug when you first purchase it, wear it and loosen up. It will break in.
