Jeans are one of those things that pretty much every guy owns, but unfortunately, they’re also one of the easiest things to screw up. The wrong pair can make you look shorter, heavier, sloppy, outdated, or totally disproportionate.
But the right pair is one of the sexiest and most versatile things a guy can wear. Denim is amazing, but the details matter.
The key is understanding that fit matters more than the number on the tag. Personally, I think a slim fit is ideal for most guys—not skinny, not baggy, just tailored enough to complement your body without clinging to it. You want a little room through the thighs and calves, a proper rise that sits around your natural hip, and enough structure to create a clean, masculine silhouette.
Forget trends that don’t flatter you and focus on fit, proportion, rise, length, wash, and quality. Find a great slim-fitting pair that complements your body, get them tailored if necessary, take care of them, and you’ll have one of the most versatile—and best-looking—items in your wardrobe.
Denim disasters to dodge asap
1. Skinny jeans that are way too tight — If your jeans are clinging to your thighs, calves, ankles, and every other anatomical detail, they’re too tight. Super-skinny jeans can throw off your proportions, make your feet look enormous, exaggerate your hips, and create pulling and whiskering around the crotch. You want your jeans tailored—not painted onto your body.
2. Jeans that are too baggy or loose — I don’t care if oversized denim is technically “trendy”—for most grown men, excessively baggy jeans aren’t doing you any favors. They can make you look shorter, sloppier, and less athletic while completely hiding the shape of your legs and butt. Your jeans should complement your body, not swallow it.
3. Jeans with the wrong rise or jeans worn too low — If the crotch of your jeans is hanging too low, you’re visually shortening your legs and making your torso look disproportionately long. Your jeans should sit where they were designed to sit, typically around your natural hip and below your belly button.
4. Jeans that are too long or too short — Length is critical. I personally like a full break, meaning you get a clean fold of fabric where the jeans meet your shoes. It works with sneakers, boots, and loafers. If your jeans are too long, don’t be afraid to have them tailored. I’ve had inches removed from jeans and had the tailor put the original hem back on so you’d never know they were altered.
5. Jeans with the wrong leg opening — If the opening is too tight around your ankle, the denim won’t drape properly over your shoes and may bunch up. If it’s too wide, your feet can look tiny, and your legs can look like giant tubes. For most guys, a clean, relatively straight opening creates the most balanced look.
6. Jeans with the wrong wash for the occasion — Dark, non-distressed denim is your dressiest and most slimming option, while medium-wash denim is probably the most versatile because you can dress it up or down. Light-wash jeans are much more casual and work especially well during spring and summer, but I personally wouldn’t try to dress up traditional light-wash denim. White or off-white jeans are the exception—they can look incredible dressed up with a button-down and loafers.
7. Jeans with too much distressing — A little natural fading or distressing can add character, but when jeans have excessive manufactured holes, rips, whiskering, and artificial distressing, they can start looking cheap. Keep it tasteful and understand that heavily distressed denim is inherently casual.
8. Jeans with too much stretch — A little stretch is awesome. Around 2% elastane gives you comfort and mobility without making your jeans look like jeggings. Too much synthetic stretch, however, can cause denim to lose its shape, bag around the knees, and sag in places you definitely don’t want sagging.
9. Jeans with oversized, low, or overly decorated back pockets — Pocket placement matters more than most guys realize. Pockets that are too large or sit too low can make your butt look flat, while excessive stitching, bling, and decoration can cheapen the overall look. Simple, clean pockets are generally your best option.
10. Jeans that are simply the wrong size or fit — Don’t get hung up on the number printed on the tag. Different brands fit differently, so focus on how the jeans actually look and feel on your body. When you try them on, squat down and move around a little to help the fibers relax and see how the denim naturally settles.
11. Jeans that shrunk from laundering — One other thing guys need to understand is that denim can shrink, especially after washing and drying. Before having jeans hemmed or altered, wash and dry them first so you know where the final length is going to land. If they already fit perfectly, I’d avoid blasting them in a hot dryer—air-drying can help preserve the fit.
12. Denim that has been overwashed — Stop overwashing your jeans! Unless they’re dirty, sweaty, smelly, stained, or stretched out, you don’t need to wash them every single time you wear them. Overwashing can fade the denim, break down the fibers, and shorten the life of a great pair of jeans.
