26 {Old Guy} Items That Make Men Look OLD

August 9, 2026
There are a lot of things that instantly age a guy—and it has nothing to do with the number of candles on his birthday cake.

The problem is that too many men hold onto outdated clothing, accessories, and grooming habits that scream “old dude.” Avoid outdated habits that age you unnecessarily, and instead wear clothes that fit, invest in timeless, modern basics, keep your grooming on point, and pay attention to the little details. When you do, you’ll project confidence, style, and energy instead of looking like you’ve given up.

Looking younger isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about looking fresh, stylish, and attractive in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond. If you want to look younger, more confident, and more put together, you’ve got to be willing to let go of the items that are dragging your style down.

The biggest offenders that give off ‘OLD GUY VIBES’

  1. White dad sneakers – Big, chunky athletic shoes instantly age your look. Swap them for sleek, minimal sneakers.
  2. Boat shoes – They’re outdated and far less stylish than a clean suede slip-on loafer.
  3. “Comfort” dress shoes – Dress shoes with oversized athletic soles look clunky and dated.
  4. Baggy “dad” jeans – High-rise, loose-fitting jeans with no shape do you zero favors.
  5. Baggy sweatpants – If you’re wearing sweats, choose modern joggers instead.
  6. Pleated khakis – Flat-front chinos are cleaner, sharper, and far more flattering.
  7. Anything hanging from your belt – Phone holsters, knives, and other belt accessories immediately create an “old guy” vibe.
  8. Old, mismatched belts – A worn-out belt or the wrong belt for the outfit can ruin an otherwise great look.
  9. Long, baggy bathing suits – Modern swim trunks should have a trimmer, more tailored fit.
  10. Jean shorts – Just don’t.
  11. Cargo shorts and oversized shorts – Keep your shorts around a 5–6 inch inseam for a cleaner silhouette.
  12. Hawaiian shirts – They’re loud, dated, and difficult to pull off well.
  13. Baggy, untailored suits – A suit that doesn’t fit makes you look older and less polished.
  14. Blue blazers with metal buttons – Unless you’re intentionally dressing for a country club aesthetic, they’re easy to make look dated.
  15. Golf shirts covered in logos – A simple fitted polo beats a shiny branded golf shirt every time.
  16. Tommy Bahama and aging legacy brands – Many older department-store brands no longer offer modern, stylish designs.
  17. Athletic shoes with jeans – Running shoes and cross-trainers don’t pair well with denim.
  18. Crocs, oversized sandals, and bulky flip-flops – These almost always make your outfit look sloppy.
  19. Neglected feet and toenails – Thick, yellow nails and poor foot care instantly make you appear older.
  20. Unkempt grooming – Nose hair, ear hair, unruly eyebrows, poor skin care, and hair without styling all add years to your appearance.
  21. Oversized tech watches – Giant gadget watches often look more functional than fashionable.
  22. Fanny packs worn around the waist – They lean heavily into “dad” territory.
  23. Bulky Velcro wallets – Slim wallets look cleaner and don’t create an awkward bulge.
  24. Frameless glasses – I think bold, stylish frames add personality and help define your face.
  25. Dorky windbreakers and Members Only-style jackets – These styles instantly date your wardrobe.
  26. Outdated colognes – Classic scents like Brut, High Karate, or the original Polo can smell dated and make you seem older.
