7 Sideburns Mistakes That Make You Look STUPID

July 21, 2026
Sideburns are one of those small grooming details that most guys completely overlook—but they can make or break your entire hairstyle.

Unless you shave your head bald or have a true bald skin fade, you need sideburns. They frame your face, connect your hairstyle to your facial hair, and create a polished, intentional look. You can have an amazing haircut, but if your sideburns are jacked up, too bushy, uneven, or poorly blended, something about your appearance is just going to look off.

Sideburns frame your face and finish your hairstyle.

When they’re done correctly, nobody is necessarily going to look at you and say, “Wow, those are incredible sideburns!” Instead, they’re simply going to notice that you look sharper, more handsome, and more put together. That’s the secret with so many grooming details: individually, they seem insignificant, but collectively, they make a massive difference. Stylish guys understand this, which is why they pay attention to the little things instead of treating them as an afterthought.

Sideburns Gone WRONG!

  1. One of the biggest mistakes guys make is wearing their sideburns too long. For most men with short-to-medium hairstyles, they generally shouldn’t extend below the bottom portion of the ear. Longer hairstyles can sometimes support longer sideburns, but for most guys, keeping them within that sweet spot creates a cleaner, sharper appearance.
  2. On the flip side, cutting them too short is just as bad. The tragus—that little piece of cartilage near the opening of your ear—is a great landmark. In my opinion, around the middle of the tragus is about as short as you should go. Even an extra quarter-inch of length can dramatically improve how balanced and masculine your sideburns look.
  3. Another major mistake is allowing your sideburns to become too thick or bushy. Guys will get a haircut, see that their sideburns are the right length, and then completely forget about them until the next haircut. As they grow out, they start looking bulky and sloppy and can actually make your face appear wider. Regular trimming and subtle fading keep everything looking clean and intentional.
  4. You also want to avoid cutting your sideburns straight across with a harsh, blunt line. I prefer a slight downward angle that naturally follows the line of your jaw or beard. If you have facial hair, think about creating one continuous visual flow from your hairstyle into your sideburn and then into your beard. That subtle angle creates length and makes everything look much more aesthetically balanced.
  5. Another mistake I see all the time is guys shaving their sideburns too thin by cutting back into the temple area. Don’t do it! Your temple should transition naturally into your sideburn. You can clean up stray hairs extending onto your cheek, but shaving too far back creates an unnatural shape—and once you start messing with that natural growth pattern, maintaining it becomes a pain. In most cases, the natural width of your sideburn is going to look best.
  6. Then there are uneven sideburns—one higher or shorter than the other. This happens incredibly easily because you’re trimming one side of your face at a time. After you’re finished, compare both sides using your fingers as a horizontal reference point to make sure they line up. If you accidentally take one side too short, don’t immediately chop the other one down trying to match it. Give it a few days to grow back. Overcorrecting a tiny mistake can turn it into a much bigger one.
  7. Finally, your sideburns need to be properly faded and blended. If you have a beard, you don’t want thick facial hair traveling upward at exactly the same length and then suddenly stopping near your ear. Your beard, sideburns, and hairstyle should transition naturally and seamlessly into one another. A quality beard trimmer or hair clipper is essential, and I also like using a small nose-hair trimmer as a precision detailing tool for cleaning up edges and creating sharper angles in tight areas.
