The Quarter Map: An Unexpected But Powerful Symbol

August 15, 2026

There are certain periods of your life that, no matter how much time passes, you can go back to emotionally in an instant. For me, one of those periods was when my fitness center was failing, and I was heading toward bankruptcy. Even now, talking about it is difficult because I remember exactly what it felt like. I was broke, ashamed, and scared. And probably the hardest part was that I was going through most of it silently.

At the time, I didn’t want my girlfriend — who is now my wife — to know just how bad things had gotten financially. I’m a proud dude. I didn’t want a handout, and I definitely didn’t want her looking at me like I was some loser who couldn’t take care of himself. The crazy thing is that it wasn’t because I wasn’t working hard. I was busting my ass, but I was taking money off credit cards to pay my employees and keep the fitness center alive. On weekends, I was working at a country club just so I could put gas in my car, buy food, and contribute to our bills. But despite everything I was doing, I was still failing. And failure has an incredible ability to make you question everything about yourself.

During the years leading up to this, I had developed this silly little hobby: collecting state quarters. When the U.S. started releasing quarters representing the different states, I loved trying to find them. Somebody eventually gave me one of those quarter maps where you could push each state quarter into its designated spot. I loved that freaking thing. Every time I got change, I’d look through the quarters to see if there was one I needed. It wasn’t about the money. It was simply something small that made me happy.

Then things got really bad financially. And when I say bad, gentlemen, I mean bad. Financial stress is one of the most soul-sucking things you can experience because it contaminates everything. You don’t sleep right, and you don’t think right. You can’t enjoy anything because every decision becomes a calculation. One day, all I wanted was a cup of coffee. I didn’t even have enough money for that. So I stood there looking at my quarter map and negotiated with myself: Okay, I’ll take six quarters that I know I can replace.

I pulled those quarters out and went to get my coffee. Was buying coffee financially responsible at that moment? Probably not. But understand what that coffee represented. I just wanted to feel normal for a few minutes. I wanted to walk into Starbucks, order a coffee, sit there and enjoy something without thinking about the fact that my entire financial world was collapsing around me. Sometimes when you’re struggling, it’s the tiniest little pieces of normalcy that mean the most.

Then Christmas was approaching. My wife and I were walking through the mall when she spotted a picture in a store window that she absolutely loved. It was a giraffe kissing its baby. The picture was around sixty bucks, and immediately my brain started calculating. I had roughly fifty dollars of available credit left on one card, I had about ten dollars in quarters left in my map, and I remembered there was some loose change around the washing machine. And somehow, if I put all of that together, I could buy this picture for her.

So that’s exactly what I did. I emptied the quarter map, I grabbed the laundry change, and I used basically every remaining dollar available on that credit card to buy her the giraffe picture. The next day, I got a notification that the credit card had been shut off because the interest pushed me over the limit. That was pretty much the end of the financial road for me. Shortly afterward, I realized there wasn’t another move to make. I was going to have to file bankruptcy. To this day, I’m not even sure my wife fully understands what I had to do to buy her that picture.

That’s why the giraffe picture means something to me that nobody else could possibly understand, and it’s why that empty quarter map became such a powerful symbol of one of the lowest points of my life. My dream since I was around twelve years old had been owning a fitness center. When that dream disappeared, I didn’t have a Plan B. I couldn’t see the future. I couldn’t imagine that someday I would be sitting here telling you this story from a completely different place financially, professionally, and emotionally.

Years later, apparently I mentioned the quarter map somewhere in one of my YouTube videos. I don’t remember when, but a gentleman named Jason remembered. One day, my business partner Courtney called me from the salon and told me that two people had stopped by hoping to meet me because they had something for me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get there, which made me feel terrible. But Jason left the gift behind.

When I eventually got to the salon, there was this package waiting for me. I started unwrapping it, and immediately I knew what it was. Jason had given me a quarter map — filled with quarters. There were even quarters in it that I had never collected myself. I freaking lost it. Out of all the things people have generously given me through the years, that quarter map became one of my most prized possessions because Jason didn’t just give me some quarters. He unknowingly gave me back a little piece of myself from one of the hardest periods of my life.

And then something happened that still gives me chills. After leaving the salon, I stopped at a coffee place near my office. I’m standing there ordering when suddenly somebody says my name. I turn around — and it’s Jason. The same guy who had just left the quarter map for me. I couldn’t meet him earlier, but somehow we ended up at the exact same place at the exact same time. Call it coincidence, call it the universe, call it whatever you want — I believe there was something bigger than me making sure I had the opportunity to shake that man’s hand and tell him what his gift meant to me.

Today, that quarter map and the giraffe picture are two of my most sentimental possessions. And the crazy part is how dramatically my relationship with money has changed since then. Back then, I was pulling quarters out of a map to buy coffee. Today, I’ve reached a point where I’ve saved and invested enough that I don’t believe I’ll ever have to worry about money again. I don’t have debt, I have businesses generating income, and I’ve established a trust. My wife and I also have created a foundation that allows us to help support children in our local school system who need assistance. I can buy things that I want, but I’ve also realized something surprising: there really isn’t that much more that I want.

The biggest lesson from that quarter map isn’t really about bankruptcy, money, business, or even success. It’s about perspective. There was a point in my life when I genuinely couldn’t imagine getting from there to here. I couldn’t see how the story was going to turn out. Today, I’m incredibly thankful — not simply because I’m financially successful, but because I feel fulfilled, happy, content, and successful according to my definition of success.

If you’re going through your own version of that quarter-map moment right now, remember something: the chapter you’re living today isn’t the end of your story. Someday you may look back at the thing that currently represents your lowest point and realize it became one of the most powerful reminders of just how far you’ve come.
