THESE people are the greatest gifts we get in life

July 25, 2026

There are certain people in your life who can change your mood without even trying. I’ve got a buddy like that. I can be stressed out, thinking about work, dealing with some problem that seems incredibly important at the time, and then I’ll talk to him—and within five minutes, I’m laughing about something completely ridiculous.

Nothing about my situation has changed. The problem is still there. My to-do list didn’t magically disappear, but somehow, everything feels a little lighter. And it hit me recently: those people are one of the greatest gifts we get in life. They don’t solve our problems. They simply make life better while we’re dealing with them.

When we’re younger, we have this idea that an extraordinary life is something we have to build. We think it’s about making a certain amount of money, buying the house, driving the car, building the business, getting the promotion, or achieving whatever goal we’ve decided means we’ve officially “made it.” And listen, I love goals, building things, and succeeding. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting more for yourself, but the older I get, the more I realize that some of the greatest parts of my life have absolutely nothing to do with anything I’ve accomplished. They’re people.

Think about the characters who have quietly become part of your story. The buddy who can make you laugh harder than anybody else. The barber you’ve been seeing for years who somehow knows more about your life than half your family. The neighbor who waves every single morning when you pull out of the driveway. The coworker who makes Monday suck a little less. The person at your gym you’ve never hung out with outside those four walls, but you’ve been saying “What’s up, brother?” to each other for ten years. These relationships might seem insignificant, but they’re not. They’re the texture of our lives.

And then there are the people closest to us—the ones we sometimes take for granted precisely because they’re always there. Your wife or husband who knows exactly how weird you actually are and somehow still chooses to hang around. Your kids who can simultaneously drive you absolutely insane and make you laugh harder than anyone on the planet. Your parents, if you’re fortunate enough to still have them. Your siblings. Your best friend who has seen you at your absolute worst and never went anywhere. These people aren’t just part of our lives. In a lot of ways, they ARE our lives.

One thing I’ve learned is that happiness rarely announces itself. There usually aren’t fireworks. Nobody sends you a notification saying, “Attention! You are currently experiencing one of the best moments of your life. Please appreciate accordingly.” Happiness usually looks incredibly ordinary while it’s happening. It’s sitting around a table laughing about something stupid. It’s somebody texting you a meme because they knew you’d think it was funny. It’s grabbing coffee with somebody you’ve known for 20 years and telling the same stories you’ve already told 50 times.

The crazy part is that we spend so much time chasing extraordinary moments that we can miss the extraordinary people standing right beside us. We’re thinking about the next goal, the next trip, the next purchase, the next milestone. Meanwhile, somebody you love is sitting across from you telling a story while you’re half-listening and checking your phone. I’ve been guilty of this. We all have. But at some point, you realize that being present with the right people is one of the most valuable things you can possibly do with your time.

I also think we underestimate the people on the edges of our lives. Not everybody who makes your life better needs to be your best friend. Think about the server at your favorite restaurant who remembers your order. The cashier who always asks how you’re doing and actually seems to mean it. The guy at the gym who notices when you haven’t been there for a few days. The mail carrier your dog has somehow decided is either his best friend or his mortal enemy. These tiny human connections may seem meaningless, but collectively, they make us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.

Here’s something else we don’t think about enough: you are probably one of those people for somebody else. You may be the coworker who makes somebody’s day easier. You may be the friend whose phone call always makes somebody smile. You may be the neighbor whose wave makes someone feel noticed. You may have said something kind to somebody five years ago that they still remember—and you don’t even remember saying it. We rarely understand the impact we have on other people because most of the time, nobody tells us. That’s why I think we should get better at telling them.

If somebody makes your life better, tell them. It doesn’t have to be some dramatic, emotional production where everybody starts crying and hugging while inspirational music plays in the background. Just say it. “Dude, I appreciate you.” “I always have a good time when we hang out.” “Thanks for always being there.” “I’m glad you’re in my life.” Guys especially can be terrible at this. We’ll roast our best friend mercilessly for 30 years rather than risk making eye contact and saying, “Hey man, you actually mean a lot to me.” But say it anyway.

The uncomfortable truth is that these people aren’t permanent. Life changes, people move, friends drift apart, kids grow up, coworkers change jobs, and parents get older. Sometimes somebody who was part of your ordinary Tuesday suddenly isn’t there anymore—and that’s when you realize how extraordinary their presence actually was. I don’t say that to make you sad. I say it because recognizing that reality should make us appreciate people more while they’re here.

I’ve spent a huge part of my life focused on improvement—helping guys look better, feel better, become more confident, build businesses, get healthier, and create lives they’re proud of. I still believe passionately in all of that. But I also believe that you could have the perfect body, an incredible house, a garage full of amazing cars, millions of dollars in the bank, and every symbol of success imaginable—and if you don’t have people you genuinely love sharing it with, eventually all that stuff starts feeling pretty damn empty. Success is awesome, but having somebody you can call when something incredible happens—or when everything falls apart—that’s wealth.

So take a minute and think about the people who make your ordinary life extraordinary. The friend who makes you laugh. The person who always answers your call. The spouse who knows your flaws and loves you anyway. The coworker who brightens the room. The neighbor who always waves. The barber who’s heard every story. The person you haven’t talked to in six months but could call tomorrow and pick up exactly where you left off. Those people are the good stuff, gentlemen. They’re the part of life we sometimes overlook while we’re busy trying to build an amazing one. And maybe the secret isn’t creating some spectacular, extraordinary life after all. Maybe it’s simply recognizing that an ordinary life filled with extraordinary people is about as good as it gets.
