What I am choosing for the first time in my life

May 2, 2026

I’m about to turn 50, and if I’m being real with you, it’s messing with me. But not in the way you think, as in the cliché, “go buy a sports car and pretend you’re 25 again” type of way. I’m talking about something deeper and something real. It’s got me looking at my life, my choices, my future and asking a question I’ve never really asked before: what do I actually want now?

For decades, I’ve been wired one way—go, grind, build, repeat. That’s been my identity in regard to businesses, investments, real estate, creating, and scaling. There was always a “next move.” I’ve never been the guy who just sits still. If anything, I’ve been addicted to progress, to momentum, and to chasing what’s next.

And then something unexpected happened.

I finished my house (not just any house—my dream home). It was a massive, stressful, cash-funded project that pushed me mentally, financially, and emotionally. And when it was finally done, I exhaled (like reaaaaaaally exhaled). And for the first time in my adult life, I didn’t feel that itch to jump into the next big thing.

I felt content, and let me tell you. That feeling? It threw me off, because when you’ve spent your entire life chasing and when your identity is tied to building and achieving, contentment almost feels uncomfortable. It makes you pause and question everything. Suddenly, the question isn’t “what’s next?” It’s “why am I even doing it?” And that question has been hitting me hard.

What’s grounding me right now isn’t some massive new venture. It’s the simple stuff like my garden and home. It’s waking up and appreciating what I’ve built instead of immediately thinking about what’s missing. It’s spending time with my wife, being present and enjoying the life that I worked my ass off to create. That’s the new flex: not ‘more’ or ‘bigger.’ Instead, the flex is ‘better.’

But here’s the thing. This shift didn’t just come out of nowhere. Life has a way of waking you up when you least expect it. A close friend of mine is dealing with early dementia, and that hit me hard (like really hard), because it forces you to confront something we all try to ignore. Time is not unlimited.

You start doing the math. Twenty years ago feels like yesterday, and then you realize, what about the NEXT twenty? They’re coming fast, and faster than you think. And it makes you ask a different set of questions that are not about growth but about meaning. So, now I’m reevaluating everything.

I don’t want to chase endless new ventures just because I can. I’ve done that, and I’ve proven that to myself. What I want now is to focus on what actually matters, which is my health, my relationships, and my happiness. This is the stuff that, at the end of the day, is the only thing that actually counts.

I’m also realizing that simplifying my life isn’t losing. It’s winning. For years, I thought more was better: more projects, more investments, and more moving pieces. But more doesn’t equal better; more often equals distracted, stretched thin, and disconnected from the things that matter most.

And here’s a big one: focus. Focus is everything. I’ve seen it in my own life over and over again. When I pour my energy into one or two things, they explode. They grow and thrive. But when I try to juggle ten things? Everything suffers, progress slows, stress increases, and results diminish. So, now I’m asking myself—what actually deserves my energy?

I’m not afraid to make big moves because of it. I’m even thinking about liquidating assets such as real estate and investments, which I’ve spent years accumulating. And, not because I have to, but because I’m questioning the point of holding onto everything indefinitely. I’ve already set up trusts and planned for the future. Now it’s about living in the present. Because here’s the truth nobody talks about — you can spend your entire life building, saving, and accumulating but never actually enjoy it. I’m not interested in that.

I’m entering a new phase. You can call it a midlife crisis if you want, but I don’t see it that way. I see it as a midlife adjustment, recalibration, and shift in priorities based on experience, perspective, and a deeper understanding of what actually matters.

Do I still love entrepreneurship? Absolutely, I love creating and building. That part of me isn’t going anywhere. But the difference now? I don’t feel the need to grind like I used to. I don’t feel the need to prove anything to anyone—including myself, and that’s freeing.

But let me give you something practical—because this isn’t just about reflection, it’s about action. If you’re younger, if you’re in the building phase of your life, listen up. The biggest mistake you can make is trading all your time for money without ever building something that works for you. If you’re always the one doing the work, you’ll always have to keep working.

Financial freedom doesn’t come from playing it safe. It comes from building systems, investing smart, and creating income streams that don’t rely solely on your time and effort. That’s the move and the long game, because eventually, you want options.

That’s where I am right now. I have a choice: keep grinding at full speed or take a step back and enjoy the life I’ve built. And for the first time in my life, I’m choosing a little more enjoyment, presence, appreciation, and living. And I’ve got to tell you, it feels pretty damn good.
